Taking the train is a very easy and convenient way to go from Milan to Lake Como. It’s a 40-minute ride from Milano Centrale and about an hour from Porta Garibaldi or Cadorna stations. If you’re taking the train from Malpensa Airport, it’s a 20-minute ride to Saronno station, where you can get on the train from Cadorna to Lake Como.

Get Out of Como: Como is the eponymous town around the lake and the first destination if you arrive by train from Milan, but don't limit yourself to the city limits. The lakeshore is dotted with quaint and picturesque Italian villages, some of the most popular ones being Bellagio , Varenna , and Menaggio.
Take the train from Venice to Varenna (changing at Milan ), then the short ferry ride to Bellagio. Most train journeys take a bit over 4 hours. By car, the journey would take at least 4h30 of driving (plus stops), from Venice to Bergamo on very busy and very boring toll motorway, and from Lecco to Bellagio along a quite difficult lakeside road.
